This type 3 Notchback belonged to my good friend Joe Ricci that passed away over 3 years ago. Joe was a great friend of mine and mentor, and a great VW guy. He owned several VWs since I knew him, and I restored for him the beautiful 1954 Evergreen Ragtop Sunroof VW Beetle that s also for sale HERE is you are interested.

Joe picked up this Notchback off of Bring a Trailer back in 2018. The interior was drab, the paint was mostly orange peel (something we could not see in pics online). Doors did not have the best alignment, 1600 dp engine ran ok, but not great. So Joe slipped it into our shop and we went to work on it. The body had a complete wet sanding done, plenty of paint was on the body, so now she is smooth as glass. The 1600 dual carb engine got a complete tune up and refreshing, brakes were all gone through.

The restoration work included installation of a rebuilt 1600cc dual-port flat-four and a 4-speed manual transaxle as well as rust repairs, a color change to Volkswagen Mouse Grey, integration of a canvas sunroof, refreshed trim, and numerous cosmetic additions, please see pics. The notchback variant of the Type 3 was never officially imported to the US, though many were brought here by dealers and sold as new. This example features a 2-fold canvas sunroof and was repainted in Volkswagen Mouse Grey while with its second owner. The car was subsequently displayed in the Griot’s Garage showroom in Tacoma, Washington and featured on the cover of a 2013 catalogue.

This has always been a west coast car prior to Joe’s purchase.
