Car accepted to the 2013 Concours D’ Elegance in Greenwich CT.
This lil Bad BoY came into our shop in September of 2011. I got this bug off of eBay from the North Western part of NY near Buffalo. This would be the earliest Bug we have ever gotten into our shop, and a ragtop to BOOT! Numbers matching bug all around, even the 25hp motor. This car was exported to Austria originally, it had no options on it, typical for a euro car.
1953 Oval from what I am told is the year oval to have since the production numbers were super low and it is the only year the oval had the 25hp motor. But a 1953 Oval also had some one year only characteristics, so finding the correct parts will be a challenge. NOTHING I CAN’T HANDLE!! That is the whole fun of it!
Check out the GALLERY SLIDESHOW HERE of the restoration thus far. Some incredible work is being done.!
I wouldn't want to put a lot of miles on a classic like that. Would it be practical to look for a later oval and drive it, say, 5,000 miles a year? I'm retired, probably don't drive more than 200 miles a month. Or should I go for something a little later? I love the big sunroof which ends in '63. I don't want the high seats and newer bumper from -- I believe-- '68 onward.
That 1953 is going to be great. I've had '55 and '56 VWs. I'm not a historian; thought the 36hp engine had come in by then. Is it something that could be used a few times a week around town, or would that be unwise? They had hydraulic brakes by then, yes?
hay man hellow chris this is adam the video of the rotting vws in the yard is called "Chips" down here. i live just 5-10 minutes away i am a all volkswagen lover but love bugs the most. chips was a airport back in its day and then mr. chip he bought some vws and then just kept buying them now titan trailers the place right across the road bought it and now is doing consturction some what to it. there is still some cars there but like u said lots have gone to a better place as they say! i never had the chance to go back there but i wished i could have. hey i always watch ur videos i think ur pretty cool guy and ur doing the right thing for the bugs i have a 74 with the origanal robins egg blue paint. but my girlfriend has a 59 sedan also its a reck but i want to save it. it was going to be crushed and i couldn't see the little guy hurt so i took it she wants it to be as origanal as possible except for the two tone brown and cream she wants me to paint it. anyway I’v always wanted to work on vws its been my all time dream. well got to go its 3am and i should go to bed. hope to here from u soon. Love to hear from u and mabe we’ll some day meet. Thanks Adam!
@joaquinPlanet it is a 53 color called L55 maroon
@jayandirene Well that's what we do with these cars, we only drive em say 2500 miles a year. I drive my 55 rag all the time with the 36hp motor
@jayandirene No the 53 was the only oval with the 25hp motor, and exactly it is use for shows and knocking around town. And yeah they have hydraulic brakes.
Hey Man, thanks for the kind words! Keep me posted on your progress with those cars. @74bugguy
